Last week we spent time in Old Lyme, Connecticut. If you are new to following me, Peter’s family is from there and the entire family owns a family home that we are fortunate enough to vacation at at least once a year, sometimes more. It is located on the Long Island Sound, and truly, just a special, special place.
The kids just LOVE spending time with their cousins. They are basically the same age, but opposite sex, and just have the best time together. Let’s just say, lots of tears are shed when it’s time to head home.
We arrived last Friday and laid low at the Old House. Saturday, though, we headed out on Uncle Barry’s boat and just had the best time. Lots of jumping off the boat and plain old fun cousin time!!
Sunday, we headed to Old Lyme Beach Club and had more fun with more cousins!! We played on the beach, had a tutorial from a nice man on making amazing sand castles, road Bull’s Eye the Inflat-a-BULL and climbed some rocks adjacent to the beach.
After a full day at the beach, we headed to a small town called Niantic and had dinner at Dad’s Restaurant and ice cream at Gumdrops and Lollipops.

Monday brought fun at Cathie’s (Peter’s Mom) pool and then from there we took a ride on the Essex Steam Train. Such a fun experience. If you are in that area, I highly recommend!! We sat in the open air section and on such a perfect day, it was truly glorious!! Did I mention they serve alcohol 😉
Oh, I secretly LOVED that the girls and I were accidentally matching. I packed their bags the night before and truly didn’t realize I was matching them…but loved every second of it…hehehe

Tuesday it rained all day and we hit an art studio where the girls made bracelets, painted pottery and painted on canvases. Shay painted an outer space scene on canvas and a football piece of pottery.
Wednesday, we headed to our favorite place, Block Island, RI. It is truly the highlight of our trip every year. We take a ferry from New London, CT to the Island. We pack backpacks and rent bikes and take the very last ferry home. This year, we visited the Coast Guard beach, went to a favorite restaurant of ours (The Oar) and had an entire baseball game going on at Fred Benson Town Beach. Then, we had dinner at a new place, Block Island Beach House…and well, let’s just say we loved it so much, we may be booking a couple nights there next year (as it’s a hotel as well). We just LOVE Block Island!!
Then, there is the Old House. It is truly such a special place. Even if we never left the Old House all week long, we would have the best memories ever. The kids play for hours on end and the adults either play with them or actually relax!!
We ended our week with an awesome bonfire on the beach and smores, of course!!
