Splurge VS Save – Handbag Edition

July 29, 2016

When is it time to splurge and when is it time to save??  I am asked this question frequently so I wanted to give you my opinion.  Those who have been following me since February, I am sure you have noticed, my couple of splurge items, you see over and over and over again.  That’s certainly intentional and here’s why –

In general, I would say, never splurge on ANYTHING trendy, you will regret the second it even begins to go out of style.  My personal rule of thumb is, if it is something I will use or wear in 5-10 years or longer AND I am COMPLETELY OBSESSIVELY TOTALLY in love with it, I will consider splurging.  But, to be perfectly honest, it takes me 1-2 years before actually pulling the trigger on any splurges.  And when I am ready, I usually ask for them for birthday (October) or Christmas and if it’s extra $$, I ask for it to be a combo gift.

My splurges are generally neutrals.  They are things I can wear with pretty much anything and use over and over and over again.  My top three handbags are my YSL Leather Clutch (it goes with every. thing.), my Chanel (so timeless I plan to pass it on to a granddaughter!!) and my Louis Vuitton Speedy (I think it’s close to 15 years old).  So, to me, those are all pretty good justifications to splurge AND, I truly use them all the time (as most of you have seen)

I have included some options in the middle price range ($100-$200) and a true savings (under $100).  A girlfriend and I had a conversation about how many handbags she buys from Target and other similar stores.  If she took one year and truly saved that money to buy an investment piece that would last forever, she would be so much happier with her purchase!!

1. // SAINT LAURENT MONOGRAM TEXTURED LEATHER CLUTCH //

2. // LODIS ‘AUDREY COLLECTION – NINA’ CROSSBODY BAG -$138 //

3. // HALOGEN ® PATENT LEATHER CLUTCH – $79 //

4. // CHANEL MEDIUM CLASSIC DOUBLE FLAP BAG //

5. // REBECCA MINKOFF QUILTED AFFAIR MINI SHOULDER BAG -$195 //

6. // BLACK QUILTED HANDBAG -$49 //

7. // LOUIS VUITTON MONOGRAM SPEEDY //

8. // CALVIN KLEIN HUDSON MONOGRAM SATCHEL – $168 //

9. // LIZ CLAIBORNE CASEY SATCHEL -$45 //

So, what do you guys think of this post?!?!  Should I do a shoe and clothes edition??  Let me know your thoughts :-))))

I love the YSL monogram bag. That is one of those I would only make the splurge in a neutral I could use for years to come.

I don’t splurge on trendy things either. Only on classics that I’ll use all the time is it worth the money! Love your affordable options!

I completely agree with you!!! It’s not smart to splurge on trends! You splurge on timeless pieces. Pieces that you can wear over and can last for several seasons! Like coats you should splurge if you live in NYC. Love this post you hit it right on the money!!!

I totally agree and I love this post!! I don’t splurge on trendy items, either! If I do splurge, it usually is a pair of shoes or a purse I know I will use for a long time! <3

I agree! If I splurge it has to be on a classic piece that is going to have to last for ages and ages and ages hehe

I own several designer handbags, but totally agree they are timeless pieces. I have actually sold several of my LV bags for almost the same price I purchased them for year ago. Provided you can pay your bills, bags can be a good investment hehe…. I have yet to own a chanel tho ( hubby says NO)
